Core

Abdominal Stabilization

Build a stronger, more stable core with this foundational abdominal exercise.

01

How to perform.

Follow the sequence — setup is half the lift.

01

Lie on your back on the gym mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, positioned hip-width apart.

02

Place your hands gently behind your head or across your chest, keeping your elbows wide.

03

Engage your core by drawing your belly button toward your spine without holding your breath.

04

Slowly lift your shoulders and upper back off the mat by contracting your abdominals, moving only a few inches.

05

Hold this contracted position for 1-2 seconds while maintaining steady breathing.

06

Lower your upper back down to the mat in a controlled manner without relaxing your core tension.

07

Repeat for 12-15 repetitions, focusing on quality of contraction over speed.

02

Common mistakes.

Fix these first — they cost reps, kilos, and joints.

  • Pulling on your neck with your hands, which strains the cervical spine instead of engaging the abs.
  • Lifting too high or trying to perform a full sit-up rather than a controlled abdominal contraction.
  • Holding your breath during the movement, which prevents proper core engagement and reduces effectiveness.
  • Allowing your lower back to arch away from the mat, which indicates insufficient core tension.
  • Moving too quickly through repetitions, which relies on momentum rather than muscle activation.
