Core
Ab Roller
Master the ab roller for powerful core strength and definition.
How to perform.
Follow the sequence — setup is half the lift.
Start on your knees with the ab roller in both hands, positioned directly under your shoulders with arms fully extended.
Brace your core by drawing your navel toward your spine, maintaining this tension throughout the entire movement.
Slowly roll the wheel forward by extending your body in a straight line from your knees to your head, lowering yourself toward the ground.
Roll forward only as far as you can maintain control without your hips sagging or your back arching excessively.
Reverse the movement by engaging your abs to pull the wheel back toward your knees, returning to the starting position.
Complete all repetitions on your knees before attempting the more demanding standing variation.
Breathe out as you roll forward and breathe in as you return to the starting position.
Common mistakes.
Fix these first — they cost reps, kilos, and joints.
- Allowing your hips to sag toward the ground, which reduces core engagement and puts stress on your lower back.
- Rolling too far forward beyond your ability to control, forcing your shoulders and chest to do most of the work.
- Holding your breath throughout the movement, which reduces core stability and increases intra-abdominal pressure unnecessarily.
- Starting with the standing variation before building sufficient core strength with the kneeling version.
- Moving too quickly through the motion without pausing or maintaining tension in the abdominal muscles.
Muscles worked.
The primary movers do the work; the stabilizers keep the path honest.
