Ab Wheel Rollout
Build core strength and stability with the ultimate ab wheel exercise.
How to perform.
Follow the sequence — setup is half the lift.
Kneel on a mat or soft surface with the ab wheel in front of you, gripping the handles with both hands shoulder-width apart.
Keep your core engaged and shoulders packed as you slowly roll the wheel forward, extending your body into a straight line from knees to head.
Lower your body toward the floor as far as you can control, maintaining tension in your abs and avoiding excessive lower back arch.
Pause briefly at the bottom of the movement when you feel maximum core engagement.
Drive through your hands and contract your abs forcefully to roll the wheel back toward your starting position.
Return to the upright kneeling position and reset for the next repetition.
Perform all repetitions with controlled movement, prioritizing form over speed or range of motion.
Common mistakes.
Fix these first — they cost reps, kilos, and joints.
- Allowing your lower back to sag or hyperextend during the rollout, which shifts tension away from the abs and risks injury.
- Rolling out too far beyond your ability to return, forcing you to use momentum instead of core strength.
- Holding your breath throughout the movement instead of exhaling as you return and inhaling as you extend.
- Gripping the handles too tightly or tensing your shoulders, which reduces core activation and causes fatigue in the wrong areas.
- Performing repetitions with a rounded spine rather than maintaining a neutral, braced posture.
Muscles worked.
The primary movers do the work; the stabilizers keep the path honest.
