Legs
Abductor Machine
Target your outer thighs and hip abductors with controlled machine resistance.
How to perform.
Follow the sequence — setup is half the lift.
Sit on the machine with your back against the pad and your inner thighs firmly against the padded leg extensions.
Adjust the seat height so that the handles are at waist level and your knees form a 90-degree angle.
Grip the handles at your sides for stability and place your feet flat on the floor or footrest.
Press your legs outward against the resistance, spreading your thighs apart in a controlled motion until you feel a strong contraction in your outer hips.
Hold the position briefly at full extension, then slowly bring your legs back together along the same path without letting the weight stack touch down.
Complete all repetitions on one side, then adjust the machine if needed and repeat on the opposite side if applicable.
Rest for 60-90 seconds between sets, maintaining proper posture throughout.
Common mistakes.
Fix these first — they cost reps, kilos, and joints.
- Allowing your knees to cave inward or turn outward instead of moving in a straight line away from your body.
- Leaning forward or shifting your torso to generate momentum rather than using the abductors alone.
- Using too much weight and compromising form, which reduces muscle engagement and increases injury risk.
- Moving too quickly through the range of motion and bouncing the weight stack at the bottom of each repetition.
- Neglecting the squeeze at full extension, which is where peak abductor activation occurs.
Muscles worked.
The primary movers do the work; the stabilizers keep the path honest.
