Abduction while standing

Strengthen your hip abductors with a simple standing movement.

01

How to perform.

Follow the sequence — setup is half the lift.

01

Stand upright with your feet together and your hands on your hips or holding onto a stable surface for balance.

02

Engage your core and keep your torso upright without leaning to either side.

03

Shift your weight slightly onto your left leg while keeping it straight.

04

Lift your right leg out to the side in a controlled motion, raising it to approximately hip height or slightly higher.

05

Pause briefly at the top of the movement, feeling the tension in your right hip abductor muscle.

06

Lower your right leg back down with control until your feet are together again.

07

Repeat for your desired number of repetitions, then switch sides and perform the same movement with your left leg.

02

Common mistakes.

Fix these first — they cost reps, kilos, and joints.

  • Leaning your torso toward the standing leg instead of keeping your spine vertical throughout the movement.
  • Swinging your leg up using momentum rather than controlled, deliberate muscle contraction.
  • Turning your hip outward or rotating your pelvis excessively instead of maintaining proper alignment.
  • Lifting your leg too high or too far forward, which shifts the emphasis away from the abductors.
  • Rounding your shoulders or hunching forward, which compromises your posture and core engagement.

Muscles worked.

The primary movers do the work; the stabilizers keep the path honest.
